The upper edge of the red stripes is shorter than the lower. In black and white, it was designed by Eduardo Otieno in 1964.

It has gone through multiple adjustments since its first adoption in 1963 by Kenya’s Legislative Assembly whereas Nigeria has had six different versions since independence in 1960;
