The park covers an area of 53.87, or about 6 in sq kilometers and consists largely of a thickening segment of the Yarlung Tsangpo Glacier. It occupies approximately Rimon, Lunang and Tingri Counties in eastern Tibet to the north and northeast of Lhasa.

The snout of the glacier virtually divides it into two lobes, piling up high on either side, with between these huge ice masses innumerable narrow outlet channels through which freshets come flowing like a cataract down a steep declivity. Along their course these streams develop what are called “dakes” where the stream flows over huge blocks of ice that it has undermined, hence “breaking
