Inspired by the legacy of the legendary surfer, as we continue to explore and document ski/wake culture we are now introduced to Eddie Aikau & his many contributions to this culture within Hawai’i. This small collection is based on our love and dedication to preserving a piece of history, something that gives life and surfing its heritage. The name Eddie Aikau has a history of meaning so many things. Hawaiians are overwhelmed with sorrow the day his surfboard containing his ʻaloha spirit came ashore; this says enough in regards to the man behind the boards and determination of never being broken by the sea. “a tribute to one of the greatest watermen on the planet” Around the same time Hawaii was going through its period of hard times, two surfing pioneers were entering their teens. One was Tom Wegener, who eventually became a respected surf enterpreneur. The other was Eddie Aikau, who had been a senior in high school JUST before the 1929 economic disaster hit Hawaii.
In 1948 Mr Aikau attended the Makaha International Championship Surfing Meet with his brothers and watched as Duke Kahanamoku took home first prize. Formal dress and medals were not expected at this amateur meet- all you needed to qualify for it, really, was a wave– but Eddie presented Duke with a handmade sweater for participating anyway
