The Rideau Canal was constructed between 1826 and 1832 by the Queen’s Royal Sappers and Miners under Lieutenant-Colonel John By. In the late 1800s, many people took advantage of its 7 kilometer pathway that wound along waterways to take a whole day excursion on one or two bikes. In 1905, a man named Jack Deighton violated the canal locks. After many years, Canada’s most famous long shortcut remained popular among cyclists as an offroad trail. Dedicated to memories of cyclists who have died while using this stretch of land, there are plenty of memorial markers.
