10 Interesting Georgia High School Football Facts

Within the context of Georgia high school football, both historically and now, there are several tales to be told. Even if it’s fascinating to recount and relive these experiences, a restful respite is sometimes necessary. One of those pauses is this one. I have come across some unique, amusing facts and other peculiarities when researching Georgia football, which I find to be quite fascinating. The following ten are:

1. Despite losing 22 straight games, Heritage-Newnan has qualified for the playoffs twice in the last two years. Obviously, a four-team area is to blame for this. The Hawks’ losing record, though, indicates that they could be among the worst Georgia high school football teams to ever reach the playoffs.

2. Only Monroe County has ever had a season with 10 losses followed by a 10-win campaign the following year. The Purple Hurricanes had a 0-20 record in 2008 and 2009, but in 2010 they achieved 11 victories and a quarterfinal appearance.

3. Thomasville tied in six of its ten games in 1967. Three of the ties had scores of 7-7. Every previous season, the Bulldogs had only had up to two ties, but in 1967, there were three times as many ties.

4. Joey Bosa, Ezekiel Elliott, and Harrison Butker weren’t even conceived the last time Osborne won more than three games in a season. The Cardinals had a 9-2 record in 1994, but since then they have had 17 one- or zero-win seasons and have never made the playoffs.

5. In 1922, the Ocilla Terrapins were beaten by the now-defunct Douglas A&M Demons by a score of 144-0. The score is the biggest high school football blowout ever recorded in Georgia. Surprisingly, the Demons had a 3-6 record at the end of the year. Ocilla’s four games that season saw them outscored 273 to 6 overall.

6. From 1960 to 1962, Valdosta won 36 consecutive games. However, in 1963, they had the second-worst record for the Wildcats, going 2-7-1. The fewest points ever scored at the institution were also recorded during the season (after 1915).

7. K’Hari Lane of Macon County led all Georgia high school quarterbacks in throwing touchdowns in 2016 with 56, surpassing Gunner Stockton, Trevor Lawrence, and all other quarterbacks combined. The native of Montezuma only threw two interceptions while running for an additional eight touchdowns.

8. The Washington Street Wildcats set a school record by scoring 100 points in three games. They beat Holley 119-0 in 1966 and Camilla Consolidated 116-6 the following season. In the last season of the school’s existence (1969), Washington Street defeated Washington-Blakely by a score of 126–14.

9. The Wolves have won the state title each time since the Wolves failed to win the region in 2001, thus this is not good news for rival teams. Buford, though, has also amassed 10 championships after winning an area championship. Choose your poison.
